Por que as crianças vivenciam o tempo de forma mais lenta do que os adultos: Explorando a percepção infantil do tempo
Anúncios
In my own family, discussions about the passage of time often lead to contrasting opinions. My youngest child insists that time moves at a snail’s pace, especially when stuck in the car during long journeys. On the other hand, my daughter argues that she is too busy to notice time passing slowly, except perhaps on lazy weekends spent watching movies. Despite their different perspectives, both children agree that the days following major events such as Christmas and birthdays seem to drag on endlessly, as they eagerly await the next opportunity to celebrate. The perpetual nature of time to children can make years feel like an eternity, similar to the way summer vacations spent playing outdoors and soaking in the sun seem to stretch on indefinitely.
Teresa McCormack, a psychology professor at Queen’s University Belfast, specializes in researching cognitive development, particularly in relation to children’s understanding of time. Her work explores whether children possess a distinct internal clock that differs from that of adults. Although progress has been made in this area, there are still many unanswered questions about how children perceive time. McCormack emphasizes that children’s conceptualization of time differs from that of adults, particularly in terms of their ability to comprehend linear time and use temporal language effectively.
One key aspect of children’s time perception is their limited control processes and attentional mechanisms. Children may struggle with patience and find it challenging to wait for future events. These factors, along with emotional states, can impact how time feels to children. For instance, excitement or engagement may make time fly by, while boredom or impatience can make it seem to crawl at a snail’s pace.
Studies have shown that emotional states play a significant role in time perception across all age groups. Positive emotions such as happiness can speed up the perception of time, while negative emotions such as sadness can make time feel slower. This phenomenon extends to adults as well, demonstrating the complex interplay between emotions and time perception.
Memory also influences how we experience time. Research has shown that our brain’s ability to store memories and recall events can affect our perception of time passing. For example, memories of significant events or novel experiences may stand out more in our minds, creating a sense of time dilation. This suggests that creating new memories and engaging in varied experiences can potentially slow down our perception of time.
Furthermore, age-related changes in neurobiology, such as deterioration of the optic nerve and decreases in information processing speed, may also impact how we perceive time. Studies have suggested that as we age, our ability to process sensory information and maintain working memory may decline, leading to alterations in time perception.
In conclusion, children’s experiences of time are complex and multifaceted, influenced by a combination of cognitive, emotional, and neurobiological factors. By gaining a deeper understanding of how children perceive time, we can explore ways to enhance their quality of life and potentially apply these insights to our own experiences as adults. Time may truly be relative, and our perception of it can be shaped by a myriad of internal and external factors. As we continue to unravel the mysteries of time perception, we may discover new ways to make the most of our precious moments and savor the passing of time in all its dimensions.
